Before you embark on your Mediterranean cruise, treat yourself to a visit to the city of Trieste, which has preserved many traces of Roman and medieval times. Just 500 meters from the Trieste cruise terminal, discover the Place de l'Unité, Europe's largest square overlooking the sea. Here you can admire three historic buildings - the Town Hall, the Government Palace and the Lloyd shipping company palace - which encircle the square. The imposing Fountain of the Four Continents also deserves your attention. Adjacent to the Place de l'Unité, the Place de la Bourse houses a fine neoclassical building housing the Chamber of Commerce. Your tour of Trieste can continue to the Roman Theatre of ancient Tergeste, then on to Cathedral Square on the hill of St. Just. Here you'll discover the Cathedral of San Guisto, built in the 4th century and renovated in the 14th. The hill also reveals the ruins of ancient Tergeste, from the time of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. History buffs will also appreciate a visit to the Scala dei Giganti in Piazza Goldini, in the Borgo Teresiano. Trieste is also famous for its many museums, including the Art History Museum with its lapidary garden and the Sartorio Civic Museum, which occupies a late 18th-century villa.
